Google’s First Standalone VR Headset Revealed; Arriving Mid-2018

Chinese multinational tech company Lenovo has finally revealed its first standalone VR headset which they created in collaboration with Google. The gadget, which is based on Google’s Daydream platform, is called the Lenovo Mirage Solo. It was unveiled Tuesday during CES 2018 in Las Vegas.

Fans have been looking forward to this product since this will be the first Daydream VR headset that will work without the use of a PC or mobile phone. It’s also the pioneer to the 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) feature.

The addition of this feature will not only let users move from side to side and backwards and forwards, but also to squat and jump. It’s an upgrade to the previous device which only allows 3 DOF. It will also allow users to walk around virtual space through the inside-out “WorldSense” tracking.

As for the specs, Lenovo detailed that the Mirage Solo will come with a 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440) display. It will be equipped under the hood with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage which can be expanded for more space via SD card slot. Lenovo and Google claimed that the gadget will last for 7 hours with the help of its 4,000mAh battery.

The Mirage Solo will not come with headphones, but it will feature the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Moreover, the upcoming VR headset will make use of dual 13MP cameras to capture stills or video.

Fans can expect the Mirage Solo to come in a black-and-white design with a headband shape that is comparable to the Samsung Odyssey or Sony PlayStation VR.

Reports revealed that those who are interested in picking up the Mirage Solo can purchase it for $449. It’s noted to be one of the more expensive VR headsets, but it will be cheaper compared to the Vive.

It will be pricier though compared to the upcoming $199 Oculus Go, which is also a standalone headset. Fans will have to wait a little bit longer for the Mirage Solo as it will be hitting shelves in the second quarter of 2018.
